Clean Ideas: The Story Of Clorox
In the early nineteenth century, Annie Murray, from Oakland, California, had an idea.
She watched her husband and a few of his friends invest in a heavy duty chlorine-based product to sell to businesses for cleanliness/sanitary purposes.
Their idea didn’t do so well. People were not convinced of their product. She insisted the version he was trying to sell was too harsh and needed to be diluted.
She knew that a diluted chloride-bleach product would do well not for businesses, but for homes.
She gave out free samples to her friends and peers because she knew they’d be convinced about the strength of her product.
Within months, bottles sold like crazy. Annie Murray pioneered a whole new industry, home cleaning. She named her brand Clorox.
